art nouveau: hotel central

hotel central (hybernská, 10) is one of the first art nouveau/jugendstil buildings in prague.  at the very top, in golden lettering, are the names q. belsky and f. ohmann.  from what i understand, the building was originally designed by quidon belsky and then redesigned in art nouveau/jugendstil by friedrich ohmann in 1900.  unfortunately i could not find more information about the hotel, and the two art nouveau architecture sources i found do not agree on the years of completion or even the architects.

but anyway it is a lovely mint color with gold accents and intricate detailing.  i especially like the ginkgo ornamentation around the central window.  today the building is really no longer the hotel central, but the home of some usual modern hotel chain, which makes me a little sad, or nostalgic for a time long ago, when people knew what slowness is.

  1. If you want, you can ask to go see the history of the building that is placed on some posters by the buffet area of the hotel. It gives the history of the building in detail.
