about my illustration studio at VŠUP. foreign students are almost completely ignored by the other students and the professor and the professor's assistant. the classes and critiques are in czech, which feels like i am trapped inside a foreign film without subtitles. normally i don't mind that much, but today was just plain frustrating because i waited three hours to get a useless five minute consultation, missing drawing class. plus, the object of my dazzlingly unfounded affection was absolutely nowhere to be found just when i had made my mind up to be brave today, so an all-around unsatisfactory experience. then i saw vincent gallo on a bus stop h&m advertisement, and felt a little better.

what does it take

i can't imagine how frustrating it must be not to be able to interact in the classroom environment like that. i have only really been in a country where i didn't speak the language at all once, but nothing was being asked of me so there was really no pressure to be able to communicate. i felt like i was able to interact with people there in such a different way. it was interesting. have you found that in prague, or do you know enough to get by when talking to people outside of class?
ReplyDeletebe brave tomorrow
ReplyDeleteshannon,
ReplyDeleteoutside of class, i speak with people in english and i know enough czech to, for example, walk into a store, buy something, and leave without having to use english.
there isn't so much pressure to be able to communicate in school. the head of the illustration department and his assistant and many of the students speak english very well, it's just that as foreign students we have to wait until it is convenient for them, and we are always secondary. they simply just don't really care. this is mostly mystifying and amusing to me, but on occasions when i really have to get something done, it is a little unnerving.
claire,
i see him once a week maximum, and even then by accident. should have been brave when he was three inches away from me. delayed reaction. shit, shit.
